One of the more common questions our veterinary team receives this time of year is, "how can I keep my pet warm during the winter?" Our doctor has some solutions and tips for you!
What You Need to Know About Keeping Your Pet Warm
The winter months can be just as rough on your pets as they are on you, so make sure they're protected from the elements. On days when temperatures drop below freezing, keep your pets indoors as much as possible. When taking your dog outside for potty breaks or walks, make sure your dog has a cozy sweater or similar layer of warmth (especially if you have a smaller dog with short fur). Indoor/outdoor cats should be kept inside when temperatures drop well below freezing, and cats that spend any amount of time outdoors should be given an opportunity to come inside every few hours. Any strictly outdoor cats should have access to covered and insulated shelter, as well as plenty of water and food.
Inside your home or apartment, make sure your pets have plenty of access to warm and cozy bedding. At your local pet store, you can find pet beds in a wide range of sizes that are made with the special heat-reflecting material. These are great for helping your pet stay nice and warm on even the chilliest of nights.
